Day In the Life: Montreal Family Photographer
It’s no secret how much I love storytelling photography. The moment I started recognizing that a documentary-style approach to family photography was what made my heart sing, everything changed for me. Approaching photography from this perspective literally opened up an entire world for me, and soon, the girl who only shot closeups was moving a few steps backwards and capturing her subjects within their environment. The world lit up for me, and ever since, it is as though I see beauty everywhere. At first, I only practiced this style on my own family, with my personal photos, because, I knew it was the kind of photos I wanted for my family- photos that told our story, but I still felt unsure if my version of beauty would speak to others. Then, I got a little braver and started to share them. When friends and potential clients started to show an interest, I found my courage, to where I now offer documentary-style sessions exclusively.
When Yasmeen contacted me and was interested in a day-in the-life session for her family, it was thrilling to find someone who was willing to let a stranger into her life for an entire day, and to have that person feel so connected to my work. I don’t know how I got so lucky, but meeting and working with Yasmeen, Omar, and their three smart, funny, and beautiful children, felt like a culmination of the last two years of my journey in photography. They were brave by agreeing to let me in to their lives, and, in turn, made be braver than I had ever been photographing a family other than my own.
And here is Yasmeen’s family, on a sunny and warm day in October, 2016:
In Yasmeen’s words:
The fact that we were able to capture an entire day is so special and priceless to me. I truly feel that these pictures and this investment will outlast my wedding pictures… It was so genuine and authentic and I know every year I go through these pictures I will find something else that I missed the year before . . . and be that much happier about my decision to do this.
Thank you to Yasmeen, Omar, Aaminah, Zubaidah, and little Noah, for welcoming into their home and sharing the beauty of their everyday life with me. I can’t thank them enough for the experience, and I will always be grateful.
